The labour supply increased by 2,271 people during May over the same month in 2007, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

After analysing data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation, the NSO concluded that the full-time gainfully occupied population grew by 2,833 persons whereas the registered unemployed decreased by 562.

The labour supply now amounts to 150,034 persons. Of these, the full-time gainfully occupied population amounted to 144,016 persons and the registered unemployed total 6,018.

Full-time employment in the private sector rose by 3,278 persons whereas that in the public sector dropped by 445 persons.

In the 12 months to May, the areas in the private sector that saw an increase in the full-time gainfully occupied were mainly real estate, renting and business activities. On the other hand, the main drop in employment within the private sector occurred in manufacturing.

Full-time employment increased by 2,419 in Malta and by 414 in Gozo.
