Fugitive Jomric Calleja, 28, of Gżira, was escorted back to Malta from Sicily by the police, having been arrested in Taormina in February.

Mr Calleja was suspected of escaping to Sicily at the end of August last year, shortly before being sentenced by the Gozo Court of Appeal.

He was arrested by Italian police in February as he was travelling on a train to Messina. Maltese authorities had issued a European arrest warrant.

Mr Calleja’s name cropped up in a drugs investigation after Maltese police seized 18 kilograms of cannabis on September 1. They identified Mr Calleja as one of the people involved in drugs importation from Sicily.

They requested the issue of a European Arrest Warrant for him to face charges in Malta.
