Diesel prices have just gone up again, the reason given was to reflect market prices movements in the last three months.
I never came across any news that the price of fuel - namely diesel and not unleaded petrol - went up; if so the increase would have been offset against the fall of the dollar.
I am quoting fuel prices from the BBC to show it is simply not true there is no difference between unleaded and diesel prices in Europe.
Prices are in euros per litre :
|
Unleaded |
Diesel |
The Netherlands |
1.15 |
.77 |
Germany |
1.06 |
.83 |
France |
.99 |
.70 |
Spain |
.79 |
.67 |
One can easily compare Spain's prices to Malta - when our GDP and standard of living on average are lower.
We can also check for any changes in the above prices in three months' time should the price of diesel rise again in Malta.
While disagreeing with the opposition's statement regarding hedging - because it can work out against us - too, the government should have the courage to declare it is just placing a higher tax on diesel and has to bear in mind the higher costs being put on transport in general in Malta.
