It has been said in this newspaper that all we seem to offer the tourists now is the friendly people of Malta. We have bad roads and cranes on every street etc. The beauty of the land is disappearing. Friendly people are not enough.

We just spent Easter in Slovenia. Most of the locals were very arrogant with us. It was like telling us we were not welcome. One instance was when we went to a market and wanted to buy some strawberries. I asked the hawker how much they were. He replied by asking from where we come from.

I told him Malta. His reply was: "Malta? No money, go away". I know for a fact that tourism is very important to them. In the hotel we were treated like royalty. The kindness and attention paid towards us was almost pestering. They went out of their way to make us feel at home away from home. They were happy to provide a different meal to those who wanted a different meal instead of the one provided. Every morning you can see the pavements and roads being swept, all the rubbish bins emptied etc. Every street was available for drivers and no cranes made them go through a maze of other streets. It is such a relaxing country. You wake up to the sound of birds and maybe another Maltese in the next balcony wishing he had his shotgun with him.

The only problem was that all signs were in Slovenian.

The atmosphere of the country and the calmness make you want to go again. So it is not the friendliness or arrogance of the people that make you want to go.

After all, we have a lot of arrogant people here and not all are friendly.

Tourists come here to relax and unwind and not to find cranes etc outside their hotel room and rubble everywhere as if we are living in Beirut.

This is not a war zone. We need to clean up badly and maybe put larger rubbish bins on the promenades...
