A French frigate, the Arago, this morning rescued some 300 migrants from a sinking boat off Lampedusa and is taking them to the Italian island. A corvette from the Italian coastguard were involved in the rescue.

The Arago yesterday also reported sighting seven corpses in a position some 40 nautical miles south of Malta. A Frontex aircraft based in Malta also reported the corpses, but none were found by the time an AFM patrol boat arrived on the scene in the late afternoon. The patrol boat, however, recovered life vests.

The Arago was in Grand Harbour on Monday.
