A freelance caterer and former chef, Kenneth Zammit, 30 of Ta’ Xbiex, was this afternoon jailed for nine months and fined €500 after admitting to being in possession of cannabis which was not for his exclusive use.

He also admitted having cannabis within 100 metres of a place frequented by young people.

Mr Zammit also admitted stealing a skateboarder's helmet from a shop,  Free Soul in Sliema, earlier this month.

DENIES SEVEN THEFTS

In a separate arraignment, Simon Borg, 26 of Zurrieq today denied in court to having committed seven thefts since 2005. He also denied relapsing, breaching the conditions of a previous release and committing a crime while on a suspended jail term.

The thefts were mainly from cars and consisted of personal belongings and audio equipment.

Police Inspector Michael Mallia said the damage caused by the accused in many of the thefts caused more problems than the actual items which had been stolen. He objected to bail, arguing that the accused could not be trusted.

Defence counsel Franco Debono said the accused had been on police bail and had been trustworthy enough to appear in court when summoned, and he should be granted bail.

Bail was granted against a deposit of €500 and a personal guarantee of €5,000.
