I refer to the letter by John Guillaumier titled ‘Church paper’ (January 23).

Since a very long time, the Times of Malta has published various articles and letters about significant events of a religious nature. We also read about various important personalities and subjects that merit due mention and commemoration.

According to the correspondent, such publications make the Times of Malta look like a Church ‘paper’. He quoted many such instances. It seems he gives special attention to subjects that refer or pertain to our religion.

His letters in this newspaper are always on the same subject and in the same tune. He writes in an insulting way and lack of respect and his letters are contemptuous to the sentiments of the Maltese majority.

He tried to degrade the very useful service rendered by the Millennium Chapel in Paceville, the missions abroad, the sacrifice and risk of a Maltese bishop in Libya, the dedication of Fr George Grima and what the Church in Malta has been doing.

Never in his writings did he ever give credit to something worth mentioning or deserving appreciation.

This is proof of his detestation of anything about the Church and his lack of appreciation of the voluntary work and altruism in her mission. The Times of Malta offers space to everyone.

It carries articles on various subjects and different opinions on a daily basis. It is a sign of tolerance and that is why we often read his letters. I do not recall anybody saying the correspondent’s letters make the Times of Malta look like an anti- Church paper. Nobody asked, directly or indirectly, that his contributions should be banned.

Everyone is free to agree or disagree with what is written. To indirectly ask the editor to censor articles of a religious nature is selfish, irresponsible and presumptuous.
