The world's first online course in science journalism has been launched by the World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ) in cooperation with SciDev.Net, the London-based Science and Development Network.

The course is especially relevant for professional journalists, students of journalism, and teachers, and is being offered for free through the Malta Council for Science and Technology website www.mcst.gov.mt/news.aspx?nid=155.

The eight-lesson course covers issues such as how to find and research stories, exposing false claims, how to make a pitch to an editor, and turning crisis reporting to your advantage - topics that are relevant not only to beginners in journalism but also experienced reporters and editors worldwide.

Each lesson consists of an e-lecture with examples, self-teaching questions, and assignments delivered by participants of the WFSJ's Science Journalism Cooperation project.

The course was formulated by experienced journalists and trainers from all continents, and the second lesson features personal testimonies by such journalists.
