Swieqi mayor Noel Muscat and Godfrey Swain, on behalf of Frank Salt Real Estate, signed a five-year sponsorship agreement regarding the Fort Madliena afforestation project and four public gardens within the Swieqi council area.

Present for the signing ceremony were Mary Anne Abela, chairwoman of the Madliena Administrative Committee, Swieqi council members, Frank Salt Real Estate director Douglas Salt, and George Bonnici, branch manager of Frank Salt’s Ibraġ branch.

Through this agreement, Frank Salt’s Let’s Go Environmental project will be funding the irrigation and maintenance of a new afforestation project currently taking place at the Fort Madliena site under the auspices of Ambjent Malta and the environment ministry, together with Swieqi council.

The project will see more than 1,000 indigenous trees and bushes being planted on the site, measuring 15,094 square metres. A number of Invasive Alien Species and other dead trees and wood will be removed in the rehabilitation of the site to be replaced by indigenous species.

The agreement will also cover support for the irrigation and maintenance of four public gardens in Swieqi, namely Ġnien Esprit Barthet, Ġnien Imħallef Caruana Curran, Ġnien F. X. Ebejer and the Swieqi Civic Centre.

Mr Muscat said: “The local council is pleased to collaborate with Frank Salt Real Estate on this initiative. We thank them for coming forward to help the locality and look forward to several years of close collaboration, with, hopefully, other areas of collaboration in the future. We trust that these initiatives will continue to embellish and improve our environment, making Swieqi a better place to live in.”

Chairman of the Frank Salt Real Estate Let’s Go Environmental committee and company director, Godfrey Swain said: “This is one of the first major initiatives of the newly-set-up environmental committee within Frank Salt Real Estate, a fresh initiative building on the long-term philanthropic work by the company over its 50 years of operations in the real estate sector in Malta.

“The committee is designed to harness the energy, creativity and dedication of employees within Frank Salt Real Estate. Many of our people are passionate about the environment and are already active in their own right but wish to also play their part in improving our natural environment through a more concerted effort from the company. We consider this initiative to be an important strategic project, particularly given the fast growth in the real estate sector delivering a positive impact on the country’s economy but with, inevitably, a less positive impact on the environment.”
