Four main roads will be rebuilt next year after tenders were issued by the transport authority.

The €32.7 million project will see the reconstruction and improvement of Council of Europe and Garibaldi Avenues in Luqa, the sea passenger terminal access road between Floriana and Marsa, Marfa Road in Mellieħa and the road linking Mġarr harbour to Victoria.

The authority said the roads were considered to be of strategic importance to the road network. The bulk of the costs, almost €28 million, will be funded by the European Union Cohesion Fund and the government will foot the rest of the bill.

Another €12 million will be forked out by the government to build deviation routes and fund works on adjacent roads and services.

Tenders for the second phase, which includes the reconstruction of the Mellieħa bypass and the construction of a junction at December 13 Road, Marsa, will be issued next year.

Last month, Public Consultation Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said announced that 64 streets would be resurfaced by local councils, which were allocated a total of €4.8 million towards the repair of 162 streets this year on condition that funds would only be used on street repairs.

A total of 64 streets in 32 localities remain to be resurfaced.
