Four new patrol boats intended to boost the island's sea patrol capacity were officially commissioned by the Prime Minister at Haywharf, Pietà, yesterday.

The boats, which arrived early last month, were largely financed by the EU.

Manufactured to the army's specifications by Austal Shipyards, they boast the latest in aluminium technology and, along with their speed and endurance, stand out in versatility, especially for their size. Being also lightweight, they have low operating costs.

Speaking at the ceremony, Brigadier Martin Xuereb described the occasion as a military milestone because it significantly increased the army's sea capability.

"We are all aware of the challenges brought about by the mass movement of people through the central Mediterranean. We have indeed gone through some tough times.

"Challenges, however, bring with them opportunities," he continued, referring to the boats.

"In brief, these boats will assist in our endeavour to improve the availability and efficiency of our patrol boats and to reduce maintenance costs."

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, who also spoke at the ceremony, pointed out that the crew at the Maritime Squadron sometimes risked their own lives when responding to a distress call.

"As these new challenges have grown, the traditional missions of the squadron have not disappeared.

We still need it to keep drugs off our shores, to safeguard the environment, to protect the integrity of our fishing grounds and to keep our seas safe."

Soldiers saluted as the national anthem was played by the armed forces' band and flags were raised on each of the four patrol boats.

Fr Joseph Meli, the armed forces' chaplain, then prayed for the protection of the patrol boats and their crew and blessed them before they proudly sailed out of Marsamxett Harbour.
