Investigators have ruled out foul play in the death of a 54-year-old American national who was found dead at the bottom of a cliff in L-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa on Tuesday evening.

An autopsy yesterday determined that the man died as a result of the fall. There were no signs of violence on James Patrick Aitken, a former US police officer married to a Maltese and who resided in Luqa. Sources said investigators believed Mr Aitken slipped while he was walking.

The injuries he sustained indicated that he did not fall from a considerable height, leading the police to conclude he did not fall all the way down from road level but climbed down part of the way.
