Around 16,000 fossil bones have been recovered by scientists from the renowned La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.

Besides finding a near-intact mammoth skeleton, researchers unearthed partial skulls and lower jaws of six sabre-toothed kittens.

They also discovered remains of a giant jaguar, camel, ground sloth, baby mammoths and other smaller creatures.

The Ice Age cache was discovered in 2006 during the excavation of a parking lot next to the tar pits. Three years ago, the deposits were relocated to the tar pits site so that researchers could work on them.
