The Forum Unions Maltin has appealed to the government to address the plight of workers, pensioners and their families and propose a House Select Committee to also address this issue.

Referring to today's debate in Parliament on the opposition motion on increases in the honoraria of ministers and parliamentary secretaries, during which the Prime Minister proposed the reactivation of the House Select Committee to address the issue, the forum said thousands of workers, pensioners and families in Malta were facing a daily uphill struggle to make ends meet.

The monthly rise in the price of fuels and gas cylinders had become a haunting worrying thought.

The water and electricity tariffs were devastating and this state of affairs was not only affecting low wage earners and those on the poverty line but also the middle class. The purchasing power of workers was getting worse everyday and the rise in the cost of living was a daily experience.

Ministers' weekly raise in pay of €500 was confusing, even if deserving. Workers were perplexed especially since the Finance Minister recently stated that the government did not intend to give people compensation now to ease the burden.
