Fort Rinella in Kalkara was a hub of activity yesterday as major landscaping works around the fort were being carried out by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna.

A 200-metre boundary wall was being built to flank the road and tonnes of illegally dumped debris from the grounds were being removed. Power line services were being relocated and unsightly power line poles and illegal structures were being cleared.

The work will also involve the restoration and erection of a rare original 19th century military iron fence known as palisade, used by the Victorian British army to enclose land around fortifications and other defence works without impinging on the line of fire in case of attack.

Meanwhile, the grounds are being levelled and soft landscaping is being carried out around the area, to restore the original layout of the historic fort.

This project is being financed by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, through its Environmental Initiatives Public Private programme.
