Former President Guido de Marco’s condition has continued to improve and he is requiring less intensive treatment.

Prof. de Marco, 79, went to hospital on Thursday morning for a scheduled angioplasty, not his first, to widen an obstructed heart artery.

The moment he was about to undergo the angioplasty he developed complications, so the procedure was postponed.

He was put him in an induced coma as his condition became critical. However, he yesterday defied medical expectations and although he is still fragile, his heart was functioning well and the improvement was tangible.

Prof. de Marco was very touched when his son, Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco, read out comments from timesofmalta.com and other media websites wishing him a speedy recovery and the courage to continue fighting.

Archbishop Paul Cremona and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi were among the few allowed in to see him and Prof. de Marco was all there, communicating with them. Prof. de Marco has been visited in hospital by Foreign Minister Tonio Borg and they chatted briefly.

The former President, has also served as deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Interior and Justice and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Justice.

He presented Malta’s application for EU membership in July 1990. In September of the same year, he was elected president of the United Nations General Assembly.
