Work is well under way on the restoration of Villa Siggiewi into a community centre which will include a day-care centre and the local council offices, Parliamentary Secretaries Chris Said and Jason Azzopardi were told during a tour of the site this morning.

The work started after the property was transferred by the government to Siggiewi local council when the lease for use of the property as a Labour Party Club expired.

The €500,000 project is the biggest to be handled by Siggiewi council, mayor Robert Musumeci and deputy mayor Karol Aquilina explained. The government is assisting the council in the project.

The restoration unit of the Resources Ministry is involved in the restoration works.

Dr Azzopardi said several historic properties have been transferred to local councils for restoration and use, including the Auberge de France in Vittoriosa, the main gate tower at Mdina and the belvedere tower in Lija.
