David Borg has been tasked to head the Government waste management agency, Wasteserv.

Mr Borg will be non-executive chairman and will head the agency's new board, announced by Environment Minister Leo Brincat this morning.

Mr Borg was Prime Minister Joseph Muscat's aide when the latter was an MEP.

Helga Pizzuto, an engineer, is deputy chairman. Board members include Marsaxlokk Labour mayor Edric Micallef, an architect, and geologist Peter Gatt.

Mr Brincat said the new board will not be taking any strategic decisions before the strategic review of Wasteserv commissioned by the Government is concluded. The study is expected to be ready in about six weeks time.

The reports will be made public.

The minister said the strategic review would cover all aspects and the new board will be expected to take note of any recommendations made.

Mr Brincat justified his decision to appoint a new board despite having their hands tied until the strategic review is complete, saying he could not leave the previous directors to continue running the agency in view of the Auditor General's "worrying" findings.

The other board members are: Godwin Pulis, Iris Camilleri Mifsud and John Darmanin.
