Former Labour Minister Freddie Micallef has died, aged 72.

A long serving MP, Mr Micallef served for many years as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. He also served as Minister of Labour.

Mr Micallef was from Mosta, which was also his electoral heartland. He was head of the Labour Youths between 1963 and 1966.

He was first elected in 1966 and because parliamentary secretary for agriculture in 1971. He became Minister for Industry in 1974 and later Minister of Agriculture.

He retired from the political scene in 1996.

The PL and the PN expressed their condolences. The PN said Mr Micallef had given his sincere contribution to Malta according to his political beliefs.

Mr Micallef is survived by his wife Maria Concetta and their children Carlo, Dino and Maria.
