Former French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing yesterday paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

Mr Giscard D'Estaing was president until 1981 before becoming a prominent figure within the European Union. He presided over the Convention on the Future of Europe that drafted the recently revamped treaty establishing the Constitution for Europe.

During their discussions, Dr Gonzi and Mr Giscard D'Estaing spoke about the original treaty and the efforts to seek consensus and acknowledged that this was the basis for the final agreement on the Reform Treaty, which was signed in Lisbon earlier this month. No official reason was given for the former president's visit.
