The ex-president of Floriana FC, Stephen Vaughan, 30, has been charged with perverting the course of justice in a case related to the death of a police officer in Liverpool last December.

A spokeswoman for the Merseyside Police told Times of Malta yesterday Mr Vaughan had been granted bail after appearing before the Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. The case was expected to be heard by the Liverpool Crown Court on September 23, she said.

Police Constable Neil Doyle was allegedly attacked and killed by three former footballers in Liverpool city centre during a Christmas night out with colleagues on December 19.

Three men have been charged with his murder and are expected to face a four-week trial on June 22. The Liverpool Echo reported that Christopher Spendlove, 30, of Brandearth Hey, Stockbridge Village, was charged with PC Doyle’s murder with Andrew Taylor, 28, of Cherry Tree Road, Huyton. A third suspect, Timmy Donovan, 30, of Walsingham Road, Childwall, was extradited from Germany.

Mr Vaughan took over the helm of Floriana FC in January 2013, resigning in February of the following year.

Last month, the club filed an application for a garnishee order against their former president and his father, claiming they owed them €70,000. On their part, the Vaughans had previously taken legal action against Floriana on grounds that they were owed a significant sum of money by the club.

After severing their ties with Floriana, the Vaughans agreed on a two-year sponsorship with Hibernians, who have been recently crowned BOV Premier League champions.
