A former police constable will face a jury today, accused of association to traffic drugs, the possession and trading in protected birds and trying to bribe a customs officer.

The crimes were allegedly committed while the accused, Jean Pierre Abdilla was still a serving officer.

Mr Abdilla, from Zurrieq, resigned in 2005.

He will also be accused of committing crimes that he was duty-bound to prevent.

The trial will be presided over by Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono.
