A 27-year-old man from the Dominican Republic this morning pleaded guilty to the importation, trafficking and possession of cocaine.

He was remanded in custody.

The man, who is resident in Spain, arrived at Malta International Airport on a direct flight from Madrid on Tuesday.

Although he was not carrying anything illegal in his luggage, a medical examination showed he had a large amount of capsules in his stomach.

He was found to be carrying at least 100 capsules containing more than a kilogramme of cocaine.

This was not his first visit to Malta.

An inquiry is being held by Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona.
