An Algerian English language student with a drug problem stole €500 from his flatmate's credit card, earning himself a suspended jail term and a reprimand from a magistrate.
The 20-year-old man, Koudil Ryad Areslane, who was living in St Julians with French student David Sylvin, admitted in court to the theft and to possession of heroin.
Mr Sylvin only realised the money had gone missing when he returned to France and immediately contacted the police accusing Mr Areslane of the theft.
At the apartment, the police found seven syringes and a spoon, all with traces of heroin on them.
In his police statement, Mr Areslane admitted to taking the money on April 23 and being in possession of heroin on May 1.
Magistrate Doreen Clarke discussed the case in her chambers with Police Inspector Trevor Micallef and legal aid lawyer Martin Fenech before passing judgement.
The student was conditionally discharged for two years for the theft and jailed for one year, suspended for two, for possession of the drug.
Magistrate Clarke told him that he had better sort out his drug problem and make sure that he keeps out of trouble.
Mr Areslane told the court that he had already been to speak to a doctor and thanked the magistrate.
