Between May 2008 and January 15, 2009, there were 1,498 foreign in-patient and day-case admissions to Mater Dei Hospital, Social Policy Minister John Dalli told Silvio Parnis (PL) in Parliament. Of these, 258 were illegal immigrants.

Answering another question by Mr Parnis, Minister Dalli said that last year there were 327 foreign mothers who had given birth at Mater Dei.

Fifty-six of these women were refugees. No details of their countries of origin were kept.
