The Foreign Ministry has launched an internal inquiry over allegations of 'a racket’ in the granting of urgent visas from the Maltese consulate in Tripoli.

l-orizzont reported today that exorbitant fees were being demanded for the granting of such urgent visas.

It was alleged that applicants had been charged €200 for a visa which normally cost €70 and in one case as much as €3.000 was charged.

The ministry said it had learnt of these allegations in the past weeks and an internal investigation was ordered last week.

Anyone having information was asked to contact the police.
