Malta Shipyards imported 2,545 foreign workers for just a few days each on an ad hoc basis, which meant they were considered as casual workers, Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt told Silvio Parnis (PL) in reply to a parliamentary question.

Neither question nor answer specified the time period over which the workers - mainly from Bulgaria, the Philippines, Poland and Romania - had been imported.

Dr Gatt said Malta Shipyards was not in a position to say how much the imported workers had been paid, because they were paid directly by the foreign agency that had engaged them.
