Synergies between industry and educational institutions are imperative for the successful establishment of a digital gaming sector in Malta, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said this morning.

Delivering the keynote address at the launch of a digital strategy for Malta, the Prime Minister said that early exposure to digital media and related technology could spark interest and the work being undertaken by the Malta Council for Science and Technology was commendable.

Continued investment in skills and research capabilities were also necessary. The government would continue to strengthen its scholarship programme which already saw over 1,500 students benefit from this investment aimed at developing a strong and broad base of local R&D talent.

"To get ahead in this young, global and competitive industry, Malta needs to be in a position to attract prominent industry names that can help accelerate the development of the sector. "The recently approved 15% tax capping to digital gaming directors and games designers' salaries together with Malta's advantageous tax system should be key attractive factors," he said.

Dr Gonzi said that over these past four years over 130 new factories and expansions were approved by Malta Enterprise and the recent award by UNCTAD evidenced the government's on-going support to industry.

"The digital gaming industry will be no exception. Government is committed to continue providing the necessary support and assistance that is required for firms to establish themselves in Malta and contribute in our collective effort to generate wealth and create employment.

"However, fiscal and tax incentives are not everything in this globalised world that we are living in. The quality of life is also important and Malta needs to continue offering a unique experience and lifestyle proposition that includes a hospitable and safe environment, good schools and hospitals, a thriving cultural scene as well as a Mediterranean climate."

Dr Gonzi said that the government believed in Malta's potential to succeed in this niche sector and past successes inspired and encourage it to move forward in its vision for Malta.

"For this to happen; Government agencies, the private sector and educational institutions; must foster and embrace the possibilities. The close synergy between these entities is a strong formula for success.

"Building on existing capabilities and unleashing our innovative capacity, Malta can become a regional centre for digital gaming. We have the vision and the potential for this to happen.

By working together we can make it happen and transform this digital gaming strategy into a vibrant economic sector in the years to come."
