Jamie Vardy grabbed the headlines with Leicester’s winning goal against Crystal Palace but the contribution of Riyad Mahrez was not lost on City boss Claudio Ranieri.

Vardy’s strike, his 10th goal of the season, saw him join Ruud van Nistelrooy, Daniel Sturridge, Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry and Emmanuel Adebayor as the only players to score in seven consecutive league games.

Ranieri said: “Jamie scored a great goal but it was amazing how Mahrez passed the ball for him.

“They made a mistake and then it was a great pass from Riyad Mahrez. I think 95 per cent of players would control the ball then pass it. He did it with one touch.”

Mourinho still the right man – Harris

Former Chelsea captain Ron Harris is convinced Jose Mourinho will turn the club’s fortunes around and stay in the job.

The champions have lost five of their opening 10 league games and in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham Mourinho was sent to the stands for apparently confronting referee Jonathan Moss

“Jose has always been a winner and, if he sits down and thinks about it today, maybe he could have handled it differently.

“If you look at his track record you don’t become a bad manager after 10 games.

“Maybe they are disappointed with the results, but I’m sure Jose will turn that around.”

Hard work paid off says happy Robben

Arjen Robben was delighted that his hard work in training paid off after scoring on his return from injury in Bayern Munich’s win over Cologne.

Robben, 31, had been out since the start of September after picking up a groin injury on international duty with the Netherlands, but returned on Saturday to open the scoring in a 4-0 thumping of Cologne at the Allianz Arena.

Robben said: “I was very happy to be back on the pitch. I think I was surprisingly good right from the start, but I have been training well and I felt good.

“To score the first goal was a nice reward for the hard work I’ve put in. When you win 4-0, the day is even better.”

More to come from Arsenal – Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger challenged his side to continue to improve after a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners maintained their momentum from Tuesday night’s Champions League win over Bayern to battle past the Toffees.

“There are still many aspects to our game which we can improve and therefore let’s try to be a better team,” Wenger said.

“We need to keep the togetherness, the concentration and try to play better football game by game and try to focus on that in training as well.”

Bilic backs striker Carroll to stay fit

West Ham striker Andy Carroll can stay injury free, says manager Slaven Bilic after the substitute’s winner in the Hammers’ 2-1 home win over Chelsea.

The 26-year-old, whose career has been riddled with injuries, scored his first goal since January in his fifth game since returning from knee surgery.

“We changed the schedule and philosophy and the way of training,” Bilic said.

“He always used to come back after five or six weeks of training, but it doesn’t help him. Now he was training hard for six to eight weeks and came back in the team gradually.

“His quality was never in question. If he’s in good shape now we have a good chance that he will be injury free for a long time.

“In that case, West Ham and England will benefit from that a lot.”

Iachini heaps praise on scorer Gilardino

Beppe Iachini was pleased with Palermo’s performance in a 1-1 draw against Inter and reserved special praise to goalscorer Alberto Gilardino.

The veteran centre-forward cancelled out Ivan Perisic’s opener at the Stadio Barbera before Inter’s Jeison Murillo was sent off during Saturday’s game.

“Gilardino has improved a lot in recent weeks and he is our centre-forward, so he allows us to play better and acts as a focal point for the attacks,” Iachini said.

“We can improve further and are working on it, but the way Gilardino trains it’s clear he is a champion.”

Evans buoyed by back-to-back wins

Jonny Evans believes West Brom can use their narrow back-to-back Premier League wins as a way to build confidence in the coming weeks.

A second-half header from club record signing Salomon Rondon was enough to seal a 1-0 win at Norwich, with the Baggies having won by the same scoreline against Sunderland a week earlier.

“It has been great to get, especially the two clean sheets and the two 1-0 wins,” the former Manchester United defender said.

“Sometimes the games aren’t always pretty but we have managed to grind them out and we want to build our confidence on the back of that.”
