The referee whose decision denied Frank Lampard a goal in the game that ended England's World Cup hopes has been axed by FIFA.

Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda and assistants Mauricio Espinosa and Pablo Fandino have been told they are not being retained for the quarter-final stages and beyond.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter was forced to apologise to the FA following the officials' inexplicable failure to spot Lampard's first-half shot had bounced two feet over the line.

Also not required for the next stage was Italian referee Roberto Rosetti who oversaw Argentina's 3-1 win over Mexico.

Villa should keep Milner - Merson

Paul Merson has told Aston Villa they will throw away their hopes of a Champions League spot if they sell James Milner this summer.

Milner will look to sort out his future now he has returned from the World Cup and is due to have talks with Villa over a new contract. But Villa have already received a £20m bid from big spending Manchester City for Milner, which they rejected.

Merson, formerly of Villa, said: "Looking at it from a business point of view it's a good deal but, for the fans who turn up every week, it's not good business.

"If Villa sell Milner I think they can write the top four off.

"It would be a miracle to get in the top four the season after you sell one of your best players."

Spurs deny bid for Palermo duo

Tottenham maintained they have not made any bids for Palermo duo Simon Kjaer and Edinson Cavani.

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini claimed Spurs had tabled a €35m offer for the pair, with Denmark centre-half Kjaer and Uruguay forward Cavani having both played well at the World Cup.

However, Spurs insist those remarks are wide of the mark.

"Palermo's claims are inaccurate. We have not bid for these players," said a spokesman.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has had issues in defence with Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate both struggling with injury problems.

Pearson takes over at Hull City

Hull City have appointed Nigel Pearson as their new manager.

The Tigers, relegated from the Premier League last season, have brought the 46-year-old Pearson to the KC Stadium from Leicester, whom he steered into last term's second-tier Championship play-offs.

Pearson has joined on a three-year contract, having replaced caretaker boss Iain Dowie.

Midway through last season Dowie was brought in after Phil Brown, who was placed on gardening leave, and was subsequently dismissed following the club's relegation.

Man. City agree deal for Silva

Manchester City have reached agreement with Valencia to sign Spain midfielder David Silva. The 24-year-old, who is currently at the World Cup with his national squad, has agreed a five-year deal at Eastlands.

Silva will undergo a medical and the transfer will be formally completed once his involvement in South Africa is over.

Speaking from Spain's World Cup base, Silva said: "Firstly I would like to thank Valencia as a club and all of their loyal fans, and my team-mates there and staff.

"I have enjoyed six years at Valencia, they discovered me as a footballer and they will always be a special club for me.

"The time is right for me to seek a new challenge, and I am thrilled about playing in England with Manchester City."

Boselli sought advice from Veron

Mauro Boselli has revealed that he consulted former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron about English football before signing for Wigan.

Boselli completed his move to the DW Stadium on Tuesday for an undisclosed fee, putting pen to paper on a four-year deal.

The Argentinian striker joined the Latics from Estudiantes, where he played alongside Veron, who struggled to make an impact in the Premier League after signing for United in 2001.

"Juan has good knowledge of the English game," Boselli said.

"He told me it was the best place in the world to play your football and that it would be the best place for me as a player."

Celtic face wait over Sol move

Celtic fans may have to wait another month before finding out if Sol Campbell, 35, wants to sign for the Parkhead club.

Campbell, whose contract at Arsenal has expired, revealed he is still no closer to signing a deal with the Parkhead club and that he will hold talks with other interested parties, including Gunners' boss Arsene Wenger.

The former England player will marry fiancee Fiona Barratt on July 17 and admits he may not be able to give Celtic an answer until after their honeymoon.

"I have to talk to Arsenal as well because they are still at the table," he said.

"I have to talk to everybody but the main thing for me right now is my wedding and honeymoon."
