Philip Lahm accused England of not paying Germany enough respect and that is why they are heading home following a 4-1 defeat in the last 16 of the World Cup.

"Maybe England were not prepared for this game as they should be," said the Germany captain.

"Maybe they under-estimated us because our players are not as famous as the England players. The reason their defence could not handle our players was because we have very good strikers.

"We knew that we would have chances on the break if we let England attack. It was very important for us to be good on the defence. We can play short, quick passes and we have a good team. It is a young team, but it is a good team."

Cameron's loss as footie fever hits G20

British Prime Minister David Cameron said he was "deeply disappointed" after England lost to Germany in the World Cup.

He was talking after a break from the G20 economic summit in Canada to watch the second half of the match along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"I was deeply disappointed. I watched the game. I've watched all of the games," Cameron said.

"I felt very disappointed, but it's not for me to appoint the England manager, I have enough problems in that direction anyway."

But the prime minister insisted "at least with a scoreline like that we can't turn around and say we were robbed. We weren't... we were beaten."

Deportivo eye Japan's Matsui

Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna have made an approach for Japan midfielder Daisuke Matsui, currently with French side Grenoble.

The 29-year-old has played a key role in a national side that has made it to the final 16 of this year's World Cup.

The attacking right-midfielder has also attracted interest from other sides in France, Russia and Ukraine, said the Nikkan Sports.

The rise of the thin-framed Matsui has pushed Japan's free-kick specialist Shunsuke Nakamura, once a core member of the Blue Samurai, to the substitutes' bench.

Zola backs Italy coach Prandelli

Gianfranco Zola believes Cesare Prandelli is the right man to take Italy forward after their shock exit from the World Cup.

Former Fiorentina coach Prandelli will be officially unveiled as national coach on Thursday and Zola feels the 52-year-old will help reinvigorate Italian football.

"I definitely like him," Zola, who won 35 caps for Italy, said.

"He is a young manager with ideas and energy and I think it is the perfect assignment.

"I think he will bring the fresh air of youth to the team and that is a good thing, something we have to work on.

"There will be moments where we will struggle but it is a path we have to go through."

Ghana's Boateng on Lazio wish-list

Kevin Prince Boateng, the Ghana World Cup midfielder, told reporters in South Africa that Serie A club Lazio are trying to negotiate his transfer this summer.

Boateng, currently on the books of cash-strapped Portsmouth, scored one of the goals that sent Ghana through to the quarter-finals after a 2-1 win over the US last weekend.

"I know that Lazio are very interested in me, but right now I must only focus on the World Cup," he said.

"It is too important an appointment for me. We will talk about this at the right time."

Portsmouth are looking to offload some of their top players to alleviate their financial crisis and Boateng could be one of those leaving Fratton Park.

Joe Cole looks to club future

Joe Cole wants to sort out his club future sooner rather than later after claiming an unhappy final season at Chelsea was down to "political rather than footballing reasons".

Cole was "devastated" after England's World Cup campaign came to an end on Sunday.

But now he wants to turn his attention to where he will be playing next season. Inter and Arsenal are among the clubs being linked with a move for Cole.

Cole said: "I want to get my future sorted as quickly as possible.

"My season for Chelsea wasn't great for what I believe were political reasons rather than footballing reasons.

"Carlo Ancelotti, I love him but I don't want to go on into it now... it isn't the time."

Bari inch closer to Giovinco deal

Bari look to be heading a list of destinations where Juve misfit Sebastian Giovinco could be heading to in the next couple of weeks.

The Italy U-21 forward failed to leave his mark in Turin and reports are suggesting the unsettled youngster is likely to join Bari in a bid to revive his career.

Udinese and Parma also showed interest in Giovinco but Bari, who finished in a mid-table position last season, look to be in pole position to land his signature.

Bari want to link Giovinco in attack with Abdel Ghezzal, the Algerian forward who played for Siena last season. Ghezzal is about to join Bari in an exchange transfer deal.
