Inter defender Maicon would relish the chance to follow former coach Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid.

The highly-rated 28-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Spanish capital in the wake of Mourinho's switch from Inter to the Bernabeu.

Manchester City are also believed to be interested in the Brazil full-back, but Maicon has his sights set on a move to Madrid.

He told Spanish daily AS: "What I want is to play at Madrid and for me it would be an honour to be able to do that because I've already said it would be a great opportunity in my career.

"With Manchester City I have nothing (agreed), I can assure."

Essien signs Chelsea contract extension

Michael Essien received a welcome boost after his World Cup injury nightmare as the Ghana midfielder signed a two-year contract extension with Premier League champions Chelsea yesterday.

Essien has been ruled out of the World Cup after failing to recover from a knee injury in time to feature in South Africa.

The 27-year-old, who joined the Blues from Lyon in 2005, sustained the injury in training with Ghana before the African Nations Cup in January and has not played since.

But Essien can at least look forward to an extended stay with Chelsea after putting pen to paper on a deal which keeps him at Stamford Bridge until 2015.

"I am delighted because the club has shown a very big confidence and interest in me," Essien said.

Fiorentina swoop for D'Agostino

Udinese have confirmed they have sold midfielder Gaetano D'Agostino to Serie A rivals Fiorentina.

D'Agostino has been a regular for Udinese since moving from Messina in 2006.

The former Roma midfielder enjoyed his best season in 2008-09, with 11 goals in 36 appearances, and was heavily pursued by Juventus and Real Madrid before both were reportedly put off by the hefty transfer fee.

It has not been disclosed how much Fiorentina have forked out for the ex-Italy international, 27, but it is thought to be in the region of nine million euros.

D'Agostino made his Italy debut last summer and has five caps for his country but failed to make the World Cup squad.

Hildebrand unsure of future

Former Germany goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand has admitted he has no idea where he will be playing next season.

The 31-year-old is out of contract this summer after failing to reach 41 appearances for Hoffenheim since joining them from Valencia 18 months ago and therefore missing out on an automatic contract extension. But he has told Bild newspaper that he is yet to receive any offers for next season.

"I am keeping myself fit and training every day, but I have nothing lined up," he revealed.

Yaya Toure going to England - agent

Yaya Toure's agent claims the Barcelona midfielder has already signed a deal with a Premier League club although he remains tight-lipped on where the Ivory Coast international will be playing next season.

Toure has long been linked with a move to England with Manchester City, captained by older brother Kolo, thought to be leading the race for his signature.

City's cross-town rivals Manchester United are also reportedly interested, while Kolo's former club Arsenal have been monitoring him for several years.

"If everything goes well, Yaya will go to England," Dimitri Seluk said.

"But we can't talk about definite clubs. We already have a closed deal, and all will be resolved before the World Cup."

Fletcher makes Wolves switch

Scotland international striker Steven Fletcher has joined Wolves from Burnley on a club record-equalling fee. Fletcher signed a four-year contract, with the option for a fifth.

The 23-year-old scored eight goals in 35 Premier League games for a Clarets side which suffered relegation straight back to the Championship.

The deal equals the record transfer fee, believed to be £6.5 million, spent by manager Mick McCarthy to recruit Ireland striker Kevin Doyle last summer.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: "Fletcher was one of Mick's main targets for the summer and - just like last season with Kevin Doyle - we were able to register our interest early and get the deal done."

Rangers set for Aussie tour

Rangers confirmed yesterday they will take part in a pre-season tournament in Australia next month.

Walter Smith's men will prepare for the defence of their Premier League title by flying to Sydney on July 20 to take part in the inaugural Sydney Festival of Sport.

Rangers have games against Sydney FC, Blackburn and AEK Athens lined up on July 25, 28 and 31 at the Sydney Football Stadium although fixtures have still to be agreed.

The squad return to Scotland on August 2 and a day later host Newcastle in a match which could see Magpies forward Peter Lovenkrands return to Ibrox.

Rangers chief executive Martin Bain said: "The club has a loyal fanbase in Australia who will enjoy watching the team in action and we're looking forward to returning after 26 years."
