Dutch title hopefuls Twente Enschede signed Bulgaria goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov from Liverpool on a permanent deal.

The 21-year-old, son of Bulgarian Football Union president Borislav Mihaylov, joined Liverpool in 2007 from Levski Sofia but has spent the last three seasons on loan at Twente.

"I didn't want to change club," he said after signing a three-year deal with the Dutch club.

"There was an offer from PSV Eindhoven but I'm glad Liverpool and Twente reached an agreement.

Twente are second in the league, on the same points as leaders PSV.

New deal was never agreed - Loew

Germany coach Joachim Loew has denied that there was ever a verbal agreement to extend his contract beyond the 2010 World Cup finals.

The German FA (DFB), who in December said a verbal agreement had been reached for an extension, said last week's negotiations were now on ice until after the World Cup starting in June.

"There was never any handshake agreement," Loew said.

"We (Loew and team manager Oliver Bierhoff) have deliberately avoided saying anything concrete about the contract situation in the last few weeks.

"We are surprised about the way in which the alleged contract details have suddenly come out into the open. A lot of untruthfulness has come into circulation."

Balotelli's fine cut by Italy FA

Inter forward Mario Balotelli's fine for provoking Chievo Verona fans last month has been reduced on appeal from €7,000 to €2,000, the Italian Football Federation said on Friday.

The Italy under-21 international, who is of Ghanaian descent and has often suffered racist abuse, was penalised for clapping at home fans when being substituted during Inter's 1-0 win.

Balotelli, who created the goal, said he was responding to racist boos and some commentators were surprised he was fined. Chievo were not punished for their fans' behaviour.

Marcelo pens new Real Madrid deal

Real Madrid left-back Marcelo has extended his contract with the Spanish giants until 2015, the club have confirmed.

Marcelo, who also plays as a winger, has been at Madrid since joining from Fluminense in January 2007 and has been more or less an ever present in the team following Roberto Carlos' departure to Fenerbahce that summer.

The 21-year-old has made nearly 100 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga outfit.

Madrid confirmed Marcelo's new deal in a brief statement on their website.

The Brazil international has won two La Liga titles and the Spanish Super Cup during his stay at the Bernabeu as well as helping his country to a bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics.

Campbell eyes World Cup spot

Arsenal defender Sol Campbell has not given up hope of playing for England in this summer's World Cup.

However, the 35-year-old acknowledges he needs to make the most of his limited opportunities to shine if he is to fulfil the dream.

He told Arsenal TV: "You can look back at scenarios but ultimately you have to keep on looking forward if you want to get anywhere in your life.

"I haven't thought about it (an England call) but who'd want to turn it down?

"If the opportunity comes along I'd definitely seriously consider it but the main thing is to get some games under my belt with Arsenal... I have to play some games for Arsenal and go from there really."

British press hail Capello's decision

British papers applauded the sacking of England captain John Terry yesterday, praising manager Fabio Capello for stamping his authority on the team ahead of the looming World Cup.

The Sun newspaper reported that Terry was not ruling out a return ahead of the crucial tournament in South Africa which starts in June.

It said the Chelsea captain was heard saying: "If there's a one per cent chance of being World Cup captain, I will fight for it tooth and nail".

"Grazie, Signor Capello" - "Thank You Mr Capello" in Italian - was the headline on the Daily Mail.

The Times hailed Capello's decisiveness in dealing with the situation.

"The one clear winner has been the personal authority of Capello. That is why yesterday was an excellent day for English football," it said in an editorial.

Nigeria sack coach Amodu

Nigeria have sacked coach Shaibu Amodu following their third place finish at the African Nations Cup and have begun the search to replace him with the World Cup finals just four months away.

Amodu had been given official backing in Angola during the Nations Cup by the federation's board as the pressure began to mount, but a stormy meeting in Abuja that went late into the night on Friday sealed his fate.

Guus Hiddink is among those on a shortlist of preferred candidates to replace Amodu.
