Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal has set the record straight after being quoted as saying that Luca Toni will be sold this winter.

Although Van Gaal and the Italian striker rarely see eye to eye, the Dutch coach claimed he had been misquoted by Il Corriere dello Sport.

"They misinterpreted my words and heard what they wanted to hear out of my mouth," Van Gaal said.

Van Gaal stated on Tuesday that Toni had made a mistake and did not fulfil the requirements of a Bayern player.

Roma and Inter have both shown an interest in the striker, who is keen to return home to boost his World Cup chances.

Redknapp: Ruud still good enough

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp insists Ruud van Nistelrooy is good enough to play in England.

Former Manchester United striker Van Nistelrooy, 33, is out of favour at Real Madrid and has been linked with a move to Blackburn, while Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is short on attacking options after Robin van Persie's injury.

Redknapp said: "He's a top player, if he's anywhere near fit I'm sure he can still play for a while but I've never enquired for him.

"Tottenham is a big club - we shouldn't be afraid to compete with others in the transfer market. But what would I do? I have Crouch, Keane and Defoe and Pav. If I got Van Nistelrooy, I give myself another problem."

I might not run again - Ashton

Former West Ham striker Dean Ashton has admitted it is unlikely he will ever be able to run again after quitting the game because of an ankle injury.

The 26-year-old suffered the injury in a challenge by England colleague Shaun Wright-Phillips in 2006 and has since tried in vain to recover. Ashton is understood to be considering whether to sue the FA, Wright-Phillips and Chelsea who were his club at the time.

Ashton said: "It's a rubbish situation. I just want to be able to walk properly and, at the moment, I cannot. I am going to hospital on Tuesday for a fifth operation.

"It's unlikely I will ever be able to jog again."

Aguero pledges to stay with Atletico

Argentine striker Sergio Aguero indicated he intends to stay with Atletico Madrid after insisting he knows nothing of an impending swoop by Chelsea.

The Blues have long been touted as suitors for Diego Maradona's son-in-law but Aguero suggested he will stay in Spain.

"What is clear is that I am happy here and my future lies with Atletico," Aguero said.

"It's always good when a team is interested in you but the truth is I know nothing and if anything happens I'll refer it to the club for it to decide what to do. Right now I'm not thinking of anything - my future is with Atletico," said Aguero, noting he has another two years on his Madrid deal.

Stuttgart fine keeper Lehmann

Stuttgart said they have fined their ex-Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann for publicly criticising his club bosses for giving in to fan pressure prior to sacking coach Markus Babbel.

"Our players can freely express themselves, but what he said was not to be tolerated and damaged the image of the club," chairman Erwin Staudt said, without specifying the amount of the fine handed to Lehmann.

"Anyone can have an opinion and voice criticisms but that must not be done through the media," Staudt told Sky.

New coach Christian Gross said: "I need players who roll their sleeves up. Jens knows the situation in which we find ourselves."

Bosnia FA accept Blazevic resignation

Bosnia's football federation (NFSBiH) have accepted the resignation of national team coach Miroslav Blazevic and two other top officials, it said yesterday.

"The NFSBiH executive board has appointed a commission that will propose new candidates for the position of national coach by the end of the week," the federation said in a statement.

Blazevic had been considering his position after Bosnia lost to Portugal in their World Cup play-off last month, missing out on a place at the 2010 finals in South Africa. Bosnian media reported that he has been offered a lucrative contract by Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

Match-fixing 'normal' in China says manager

Match-fixing in Chinese football is "normal", according to a club manager arrested in a nationwide police probe.

Qingdao manager Liu Hongwei has been charged with accepting bribes to throw a match against Chengdu Blades in 2007, which helped the English-owned Sichuan club win promotion to the country's top flight.

"The professionals might be able to see the flaws," Liu said.

"But the professionals would have already known about many of these kinds of things in Chinese football. They are normal."

Chengdu officials are alleged to have given Liu bribes of $73,250 to throw the second division match, in which Qingdao fielded a second-string team.
