Treble winners Barcelona are planning to sign three or four top players to strengthen the squad for next season, president Joan Laporta said yesterday.

"We anticipate signing three or four high-level names to occupy the positions that the technical staff think need reinforcing," Laporta said.

Laporta also said there had been a number of offers for striker Samuel Eto'o and club officials would be meeting the Cameroon international's agent this week to discuss whether he will stay or be sold.

Barcelona have been linked in the media with a bid for Inter striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and reports said Eto'o may move to the Italian club as part of the deal.

Vidic set to miss Faroes game

Serbia defender Nemanja Vidic is likely to miss his side's World Cup qualifier against Faroe Islands after limping out of Saturday's 1-0 win over Austria, his coach said.

Vidic limped off with an ankle injury at half-time and coach Radomir Antic said he was likely to miss the trip to Torshavn for Wednesday's game.

Captain Dejan Stankovic and Bosko Jankovic are suspended for the game but Antic said he would not be bringing any cover into the squad.

"The bad news is that we will miss some regular starters on Wednesday but we have enough depth in the squad to get the job done against the Faroes," Antic said.

Martinez deal agreed, says Wigan boss

Roberto Martinez will be confirmed as Wigan Athletic's new manager this week, the Premier League club's chairman Dave Whelan said.

"Everything is virtually agreed and the only reason it's not been signed up is because I'm in Majorca," Whelan said. "I'm due back on Wednesday and the deal will be completed on Wednesday afternoon.

Martinez, who has won many admirers since becoming manager of Swansea City, is set to replace Steve Bruce who has moved to Sunderland.

Real Madrid, United chase Valencia

Manchester United and Real Madrid have tabled bids in excess of £16 million for Wigan's Antonio Valencia, according to Sky Sports News.

United are looking to sign a creative winger on the right after Nani failed to live up to expectations and Valencia is said to have left a positive impression on boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Real are desperate to overhaul Spanish and continental champions Barcelona and the 23-year-old was thought to be close to a move in the winter transfer window.

Valencia joined Wigan in 2006 in a loan move from Recreativo Huelva and the deal was made permanent in January 2008.

Kaka to make decision soon

Kaka has announced that he will make a decision on whether to join Real Madrid or stay at Milan in the near future.

Speaking to reporters after helping Brazil to a comfortable 4-0 World Cup qualifying win in Uruguay, Kaka confirmed that he will reveal his future plans very soon, possibly in the next few days.

"I will speak about my future soon," Kaka said. "In the right moment I will speak about it."

Zinedine Zidane, now an advisor to Real Madrid, declared last week that a deal to bring the former World Player of the Year to the Bernabeu was all but done. However, Milan are set to hold talks with their star man today at the latest.

Drogba keen on Ancelotti talks

Didier Drogba is eager to speak to new Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti before signing a new contract with the Blues.

The striker has been in talks over a new contract extension for a number of weeks but he has put negotiations on hold, revealing that he wants Ancelotti to outline his plans for the Blues before he puts pen to paper.

"I have read a lot of things but I prefer to know first hand what plans he has and then decide what is best for me," the 31-year-old Ivory Coast striker said.

"I have heard some good reports about him (Ancelotti). He is a big name coach who has won a lot of titles. They say he is a very open approachable manager and that is the style of coach that I like."

Inter set sights on Van Persie

Reports in England claimed yesterday that Inter are preparing a £25m bid to take Arsenal striker Robin van Persie to the San Siro.

Inter coach Jose Mourinho is keen to strengthen his squad with a view to mounting a stronger challenge for the Champions League next season.

The Sunday Mirror reported that Van Persie features prominently on Mourinho's target list. The Dutchman's contract has another two years left to run but it's believed he is irritated at the lack of silverware at Arsenal and is seeking a move elsewhere.

An offer of £25m may tempt Arsenal to part with Van Persie rather than risk losing him for free in 2011.
