Francesco Totti told reporters he wanted coach Luciano Spalletti to stay at Roma next season. Spalletti has long been linked with a move to Juventus following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri.

Ciro Ferrara stepped in for Ranieri as interim coach but he isn't expected to land the job permanently. Spalletti is the favourite, although he faces competition from Antonio Conte, Laurent Blanc and Gian Piero Gasperini.

"For me, he stays. President Rosella Sensi told me so," Totti said.

Totti matched Giampiero Boniperti's record of 178 Serie A goals on Sunday and the 32-year-old now wants to overtake Roberto Baggio, who scored 205.

FIFA in compliance with WADA code

FIFA and WADA appear to see eye-to-eye after a series of disputes between the two bodies regarding the fight against doping.

FIFA said it had been told it was in compliance with the WADA code, suggesting an end to the clashes over anti-doping regulations, in particular the 'whereabouts' rule requiring athletes to give three months' notice of where they will be for an hour each day.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said: "WADA confirmed that the 2009 edition of the FIFA anti-doping regulations complied with WADA in all respects, the sole exception is article 54.

"That article concerns the return of a player to training following suspension. We are asking that in a 12-month suspension, the player can start training after nine months."

Sampdoria name Del Neri as coach

Sampdoria have named Gigi Del Neri as their new coach after the departure of Walter Mazzarri, the Serie A club said.

Former Roma and Chievo boss Del Neri had already announced he would be leaving Atalanta after two solid years and has been appointed just a day after the end of the campaign.

Atalanta and Sampdoria both finished in mid-table with Samp losing the Italian Cup final to Lazio, prompting the club not to renew Mazzarri's contract.

Villa need to spend, Taylor says

Martin O'Neill needs to bring in new players if he is to take Aston Villa up to the next level, the club's former boss Graham Taylor believes.

Taylor has concluded that the current Villa squad lacks depth to make a real challenge to the "big four" in the Premier League.

Villa operated with the smallest squad last season and faded badly after a promising start.

"After you have been in charge for three years, you will eventually be judged by your signings," Taylor said.

"He has operated with only 23 players this season. If he gets into the top four next season, he will want to operate with at least five more players."

Sunderland agree fee for Bruce

Sunderland are on the verge of appointing Steve Bruce as their new manager after agreeing a compensation package for the Wigan boss.

Bruce is set to replace Ricky Sbragia, who resigned on the final day of the season after narrowly keeping the club in the Premier League.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, who paid Birmingham three million pounds to release Bruce from his St Andrews contract in 2007, has insisted Sunderland had to come up with a similar remuneration.

That financial package has now been agreed and Sunderland officials are believed to be in Portugal - where Bruce is on holiday - to thrash out personal details after being given permission to start talks.

Five officials for Europa League

The Europa League, the renamed UEFA Cup, will feature five on-field match officials next season as part of a FIFA experiment.

FIFA's plan features two extra officials to monitor the penalty boxes to help referees with the tough calls close to goal as an alternative to proposals for the use of video images.

The International Football Association Board, comprising the four British associations and four FIFA representatives, which sets the rules for the world's most popular sport, has backed the experiment.

"We were looking where we could conduct this experiment and we have found the solution together with UEFA - they have put at disposal the Europa League," FIFA boss Sepp Blatter said.

The experimental matches will start at the group stage.

Quagliarella signs for Napoli

Italy striker Fabio Quagliarella has signed for Napoli from Udinese on a five year-deal. The speedy 26-year-old has returned to his home town despite interest from Serie A champions Inter, whose coach Jose Mourinho recently praised Quagliarella's attitude. Media reports said Juventus were also tracking the player.

Quagliarella has scored 41 goals in 146 Serie A appearances for Torino, Ascoli, Sampdoria and Udinese while he has 12 Italy caps.

Udinese and Napoli were both flying high in the early weeks of the season but their form dipped around the same time and they both finished outside the European places.

Quagliarella rejoins Napoli coach and former Italy boss Roberto Donadoni, who gave the forward his Azzurri debut and took him to Euro 2008.
