Primera Liga strugglers Getafe have sacked coach Victor Munoz following their third straight defeat, the club said yesterday.

Madrid-based Getafe slipped to 17th in the standings, one point above the relegation places, after Sunday's 2-1 loss at home to Villarreal and have five matches left in the season to avoid relegation.

"These are decisions that you take based on an assessment of the state of the team," sporting director Toni Munoz said.

"We don't know anything about the next coach but we hope to announce his name soon," he added.

Munoz, 52, was appointed in June last year to replace Dane Michael Laudrup.

Escude flattered by Inter interest

Serie A leaders Inter are reportedly tracking Sevilla centre-half Julien Escude.

Escude confirmed that he was aware of Inter's interest but insisted that no approach has been made yet.

"I have a contract with Sevilla until 2011 and I like this club," the 28-year-old said.

"But when Inter are interested in you it proves that you are doing something right.

"I have always tried to respect my contracts in football but you never know what could happen."

Keeper dismissed in ball boy incident

Gimnasia-Jujuy goalkeeper Gaston Pezzutti was sent off after an altercation with a ball boy during his team's 1-0 defeat at River Plate in the Argentina championship at the weekend.

It was the latest in a series of incidents involving ball boys in Argentina, who are often accused of time-wasting when the home team are defending a slender lead.

The ball boy, who Argentine media said played in River's youth divisions, dallied as he returned the ball for a goal kick in the 70th minute of Sunday evening's game.

After finally collecting the ball, a furious Pezzutti threw it back at the youth and was sent off. The ball boy was also dismissed.

Juve target Galatasaray's Turan

Juventus are chasing the signature of Galatasaray winger Arda Turan, German media reported yesterday.

The Serie A club are facing competition from German champions Bayern Munich who have lined up the 22-year-old as a possible replacement for Franck Ribery.

Juve coach Claudio Ranieri is keen to snap up Turan as he sees the Turkish midfielder as a good alternative to Pavel Nedved who will hang up his boots at the end of the season.

Bayern and Juventus are both said to be prepared to pay £11 million for Turan.

Spalletti facing uncertain future

Luciano Spalletti's job as Roma coach is on the line as the Serie A club's top officials will meet this week to discuss his future, Il Corriere dello Sport reported.

Roma went down 4-1 to Fiorentina on Saturday and their chances of qualifying for the Champions League are very remote now. Failure to earn a berth in Europe's top competition would be a serious blow to the Sensi family, the Roma owners, who need the Champions League money to keep the club afloat.

Roma president Rosella Sensi is said to be unhappy with the spirit shown by the team in recent matches.

David Pizarro, red-carded in the 59th minute of Saturday's Serie A clash, became the 12th Roma player to be sent off this season and some fear Spalletti has lost the dressing room.

Rafael signs contract extension

Manchester United's young Brazilian defender Rafael has signed a contract extension, the Premier League club said yesterday.

The 18-year-old right-back, who has made 24 appearances in his debut season, has agreed a deal to keep him at Old Trafford until 2013.

"His enthusiasm and the adventurous way he plays are typical of a Manchester United player and we are delighted that he has signed a new contract," manager Alex Ferguson said.

"It has been an exciting time for me and I want to be part of this for a long time," Rafael said.

Arsenal can beat everybody - Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said his side could beat "everybody" when they were at their best as he urged them to be fearless against Manchester United in tomorrow's Champions League semi-final first leg clash at Old Trafford.

The Gunners head into that match unbeaten in 20 games after Cesc Fabregas's double secured a 2-0 Premier League victory at home to Middlesbrough on Sunday.

"It's important that we are at our best on Wednesday night because when we are at our best we can beat everybody," Wenger said.

"If you go to Old Trafford without belief you make it very difficult from the start."
