Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan has launched a scathing attack on his Newcastle counterpart Mike Ashley, accusing him of lacking class.

Both men made their fortunes in sportswear retailing with Whelan taking over Wigan in 1995 when they were a lower league club and Ashley taking over Newcastle in 2007.

"When I first went there just after Mike Ashley had bought it he turned up in the boardroom in a pair of jeans, a pair of trainers and a replica shirt. Immediately he did that, the club's gone," Whelan told yesterday's Sun newspaper.

"He's got no class whatsoever. You can't get a Tottenham fan buying Newcastle and letting people thinks he supports them. It's not right, there's no pride left in the club."

Ronaldo hits brace in Corinthians draw

Striker Ronaldo scored twice for Corinthians in a 2-2 draw againstPonte Preta in the Paulista championship.

The 'Phenomenal One', making his fifth appearance on his latest comeback from injury, also completed the full 90 minutes for the first time in a Corinthians shirt.

Ponte Preta went ahead in the 32nd minute but Corinthians equalised four minutes later when Ronaldo won and converted a penalty, his third goal for the club.

The high point came in the 58th minute with a superb Ronaldo goal, when he collected a cross with his left foot, slipped inside his marker and placed the ball in the far corner.

TV advert instead of training for S. Africa

South Africa's football team turned up for a training session on Wednesday only to find they had been lined up to act in a television advert no one had told them about.

The 2010 World Cup hosts were scheduled six months ago to make an advert for their sponsors but neither the coach nor his team had been told by officials.

S. Africa's Brazilian coach Joel Santana had to be coaxed into agreeing to abandon his planned session and instead allow his players to be turned into temporary actors.

South Africa play a friendly against Norway in Rustenburg tomorrow before heading to Switzerland for a match against Portugal in Lausanne on Tuesday.

Kenya kits disappear ahead of qualifier

Sales of Kenyan football shirts are set for a boost after the national team's kit went missing days ahead of a World Cup qualifier against Tunisia in Nairobi.

Nairobi's Standard newspaper reported that officials will have to go out and purchase replica jerseys from the shops after three sets of kits and 2,000 balls went missing from the Kenyan association's stock.

Football Kenya's technical director Patrick Naggi told the newspaper there was no time to order a new set of kits from the team's sponsors and there was no option but to buy from the shops.

Capello calls Rooney 'a crazy man'

England manager Fabio Capello is hoping a light-hearted reference to Wayne Rooney's dismissal at Fulham last weekend will stand the Manchester United striker in good stead.

Capello called Rooney "a crazy man" in training on Tuesday after the Manchester United forward punched the corner flag following his red card at Craven Cottage.

The Italian coach expressed his view in front of the entire squad with reports in the English media claiming that Capello's intention was not to give Rooney a public dressing down but to banish any lingering tension before the real business of preparing for tomorrow's friendly with Slovakia.

However, having seen Rooney lose his temper on a number of occasions since succeeding Steve McClaren last year, Capello will hope his subtle reference prompts an acknowledgement that such events need to be curbed.

Chelsea search for an 'Asian Star'

Chelsea have launched a "Search for an Asian star" campaign in a bid to find youth players of British-Asian background who could join the London Premier League club's academy.

Very few British Asians have made it through to the professional ranks of English football while it was only in 2004 that Fulham's Zesh Rehman became the first to play in the Premier League.

Chelsea, who have two British Asians at their academy, will be holding open trials at their training ground in Cobham for youngsters from Asian backgrounds in May, with the most talented being offered a three-day residential trial.

The trials, for players in the under-12, 13 and 14 age groups, will be open to London and South-East based players from Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi backgrounds.

Blackburn's Ooijer to rejoin PSV

Blackburn Rovers defender Andre Ooijer will return to PSV Eindhoven at the end of the season, the Dutch international told PSV TV.

The 34-year-old Ooijer joined Blackburn in 2006 after eight years at PSV during which he won five titles.

"We agreed that right now I will focus on the Dutch team and Rovers but in May we will finalise the deal," said Ooijer.
