Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti could be interested in taking over as Chelsea manager at the end of the season, Milan director Umberto Gandini said.

"If in July the Chelsea job is still available, Ancelotti could consider it," Gandini told reporters.

Chelsea, who sacked Luiz Felipe Scolari on Monday, will have Russia coach Guus Hiddink managing the Premier League team until the end of the campaign.

Birmingham boss arrested again

Birmingham City managing director Karren Brady was arrested this week by London police investigating alleged corruption in English soccer.

Brady, who was also arrested last April along with the Championship club's co-owner David Sullivan as part of the same investigation, was questioned at a London police station and then released on bail.

She said it would be "inappropriate to give any further details at this stage".

Seven people, among whom Harry Redknapp, have been arrested at various stages during the investigation. None has been charged.

Clubs investigated include Newcastle United and Rangers.

Top clubs against salary cap

Europe's top clubs have poured cold water on a proposal to introduce salary caps in an effort to fight spiralling costs.

The European Club Association (ECA) of 137 leading teams met on Tuesday to discuss cost-cutting ideas, including a plan that would have limited clubs to spending no more than 50 per cent of turnover on player wages.

"When it came to cost control the general impression was it was no simple task to find a solution," said ECA chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, a strong supporter of the proposal.

"A clear majority of our members were in favour of financial fair-play via the licensing system so we will prefer that route for now and leave cost control for the future."

Wenger mulling bid for Inter's Santon

Speculation is rife that Arsenal are prepared to bid for Davide Santon, the promising Inter defender.

Santon, 18, was unheard of before Jose Mourinho introduced him to the senior squad this season. He played against Roma in the Italian Cup quarter-finals and since then featured in four Serie A matches.

According to media reports in the UK, Santon has also caught the eye of Arsene Wenger who is reportedly sending a scout to watch him play in the Milan derby this weekend. The French mentor, however, will have to make a good offer to persuade Inter to let home-grown talent Santon go.

1860 Munich faces financial crisis

TSV 1860 Munich, one of the Bundesliga's founding teams, faces immediate financial problems after the club said that investors brought in to turn it around had provisionally pulled out.

1860 Munich, now playing in the second division, said its plan submitted to the German Football League (DFL) and which would have brought in a group of investors to bail the club out, was not approved.

1860 Munich were once the city's biggest club, winning the Bundesliga in 1966. After about a decade in the top division, they dropped down to the second division in 2004.

Scolari to get $11.1m in compensation

Chelsea have agreed a compensation package with sacked Brazilian manager Luiz Felipe Scolari and his assistants.

Although no details were given, media reports have suggested Scolari could walk away with at least 11.1 million dollars.

"Chelsea can confirm that compensation has been agreed with Luiz Felipe Scolari in accordance with the terms of his contract," the West London club said.

"Agreement was also reached with his backroom staff and we would like to thank them for their work."

Scolari was dismissed on Monday after seven months in charge.

Agger still to sign Liverpool deal

Daniel Agger still has to sign a new deal at Liverpool, his agent said in response to reports that the defender had agreed terms over a new long-term contract.

Agger, who has less than 18 months to run on his current contract, said he is ready to wait until the summer to sort out his future.

"There is no dialogue on a new contract with the club. It seemed like Liverpool were eager to close this deal but that proved to be wrong," Agger said.

"For me it's OK to wait and see how things evolve in the summer. I believe that I am in a good position for negotiations and I wish for more time in the red jersey."
