The English Football Association is to meet Premier League managers as soon as possible after a spate of criticism towards referees.

"The FA will seek to meet the League Managers Association and individual managers regarding the 'Respect' programme as soon as possible," director of governance Jonathan Hall said in a statement.

"We accept it can be very frustrating for managers when an incorrect decision is taken but no referee does so deliberately."

The 'Respect' campaign was launched this season to improve levels of behaviour in the sport.

Maradona to visit India next month

Argentina football great Diego Maradona will visit Kolkata, India on December 6, a regional lawmaker organising the trip said yesterday.

The new Argentina coach will inaugurate a football academy and participate in a charity dinner where some of his playing gear would be auctioned, Shamik Lahiri told Reuters.

Thousands of fans are expected to attend a public reception planned for the 1986 World Cup-winning captain, he added.

Everton set to sign Egyptian Meteb

Egypt international Emad Meteb will join Everton in January, his agent has claimed.

The striker, currently on loan at Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad, was on the verge of joining Championship side Bristol City last summer but now it looks like Everton are in pole position to sign him.

"I travelled to England a week ago to agree on the final details of the contract with Everton," his agent Mohamed Hamid told the Egyptian media.

"We agreed on everything. Emad was informed about the course of negotiations, and he is glad about it."

It is claimed Everton could pay as much as £2 million to his parent club Al Ahly.

Andy Cole retires

Former England and Manchester United striker Andy Cole has announced his retirement from football, bringing to an end a successful 19-year career.

However, Cole has admitted his acrimonious departure from Championship strugglers Nottingham Forest was not how he envisaged bowing out.

"It's not the ideal ending," Cole was quoted as saying.

"It just wasn't working out. I told them from the outset that I didn't want to go there to sit on the bench because I didn't want to be perceived as sitting back and making easy money."

The 37-year-old, who won 15 England caps, scored 289 career goals and won five Premier League titles, the Champions League and two FA Cups during his most successful period at Manchester United.

Van Nistelrooy seeks second opinion

Injured Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has flown to the United States to consult the surgeon who operated on his troublesome right knee in 2000, the Primera Liga champions said.

The 32-year-old Dutchman was hurt last month before returning to play most of last Wednesday's 2-0 home defeat by Juventus. But a scan appeared to show an aggravation of the injury that threatened to end his career eight years ago.

Van Nistelrooy travelled to the US to get a second opinion from American doctor Richard Steadman who operated on him while he was at PSV Eindhoven, Real said on their website.

Sheringham keen on Spurs return

Teddy Sheringham is interested in discussing a role on the Tottenham coaching staff.

Former Tottenham players Tim Sherwood and Les Ferdinand have already agreed to join Harry Redknapp's revolution, while Sheringham is keen to take up a coaching position.

"Harry was asked a question about which ex-players he'd like to work with and my name was mentioned as was Les Ferdinand and Tim Sherwood," Sheringham said.

"I've not spoken to Harry at all about it and all the talk of me returning to Spurs is just rumour so far.

"But if Harry asked me the question about a coaching job, I would definitely listen to what he has to say."

Barca ready to swoop for Cruz

Julio Cruz is reportedly attracting strong interest from Barcelona amid reports that the Argentine striker is still at odds with Inter coach Jose Mourinho despite scoring important goals for the Serie A leaders in recent games.

Cruz's contract at San Siro runs out next summer and his position at the club is uncertain as no effort has been made to discuss a new deal.

Reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport yesterday claimed that Spanish giants Barcelona are keeping an eye on Cruz's situation.

Bologna are also said to be in the frame but Inter still have time to fend off interest in Cruz by initiating talks over a new contract.
