Former Liverpool forward Dean Saunders has been handed the onus of rescuing Wrexham from non-league football. Wales's oldest club suffered relegation from the Football League at the end of last season.

Brian Little was sacked as Wrexham manager last week after the team gained only one win in six games in the Blue Star Premier League.

Now Saunders, who has held top coaching jobs at Blackburn and Newcastle, has taken the challenge to start his management career outside of the top four divisions of English football.

Saunders has been working as coach to the senior Wales squad under manager John Toshack, and will be allowed to combine the two roles.

Newcastle attract seven potential buyers

Seven potential buyers could be ready for a tug-of-war to become owners of Premier League club Newcastle United.

Reports in England yesterday said that investment bankers Seymour Pierce, who have been appointed by owner Mike Ashley to sell the club, have issued a prospectus of sale to the seven interested parties.

A Nigerian consortium, fronted by London-based spokesman Chris Nathaniel, are prepared to table a bid of around £200 million. However, it has emerged in the last few days that a South African consortium could be ready to make an offer somewhere nearer the £300 million Ashley is understood to be asking.

Crouch dismayed by Sol abuse

Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch has voiced his dismay at the abuse Tottenham Hotspur supporters aimed at team-mate Sol Campbell during Pompey's 2-0 home win.

The Football Association has confirmed it is looking into the treatment Campbell received.

"I am not often surprised but I was by the events of the weekend," Crouch said.

"We all expect some banter but on Sunday a line was crossed. That is why people are still talking about it."

Votes for cash allegation

The English FA were offered votes for money during their unsuccessful bid to host the 2006 World Cup, according to former executive director David Davies.

The offer of votes for cash was made in March 2000 by "an individual well-connected in international footballing circles", Davies writes in his book 'FA Confidential'.

Davies claims the person who made the approach was foreign and not a member of FIFA's executive committee. The allegations could cast a shadow over England's current bid for the 2018 World Cup.

The 2006 World Cup was staged in Germany.

Adriano gets late Brazil call-up

Inter striker Adriano has received a late call-up to Brazil's squad for this month's World Cup 2010 qualifiers.

Adriano has yet to score in the Serie A this season but his fine performances have earned him a regular place in Jose Mourinho's team.

Like Milan ace Ronaldinho, Adriano had been left out of this month's Selecao squad but an injury to Sevilla forward Luis Fabiano prompted coach Carlos Dunga to call the Inter striker.

Brazil face Venezuela and Bolivia on October 12 and 15 and Dunga is under pressure to revive his team's fortunes after some disappointing recent results.

Juve keeping an eye on Pieters

Juventus scouts are keeping an eye on Dutch defensive starlet Erik Pieters amid reports that the Serie A giants could make a bid next summer.

Over the last few weeks, Juve head scout Renzo Castagnini has flown to Holland to assess the PSV defender who can play either as a left-back or in the centre of defence and is a regular for Holland's Under-21 side.

According to Tuttosport, Juve are considering making a significant offer for Pieters, who only joined PSV from Utrecht last July for just over £2m.

Espanyol face €18,500 fine

Espanyol could be fined €18,500 and six fans €65,000 each after flares were thrown at Saturday's Espanyol-Barcelona match, a spokesman for the sports ministry said.

Crowd trouble at the Primera Liga game forced the referee to halt it for almost 10 minutes and take the players off the pitch during the second half.

Home side Espanyol were 1-0 up when television pictures showed a flare being lobbed from the upper stands in the direction of the fans below.

Espanyol, who lost the game 2-1, are facing sanctions for allegations that controls at the ground on Saturday were not properly enforced, said the spokesman.

On Monday, in a separate legal hearing on the trouble at the game, five Barcelona fans were remanded in custody.
