Overall wages in Serie A rose by £81.5m this season, a study conducted by Gazzetta dello Sport said.

The earnings of all the Italian League players put together amounts to £620m per year, the highest figure in the last five terms.

Milan were the big spenders, but have been joined by local rivals Inter, as both now shell out £97 million for their players.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the highest earner in Serie A, as his contract guarantees him £8.8m. The Inter forward is followed by Kaka, the Milan schemer, who receives £7.3 million.

Juventus have picked up the pace paying £92m, while Roma raised their output to £42m.

Di Canio flattered by West Ham link

Paolo Di Canio has revealed his "pride" at being linked with the managerial vacancy at Upton Park .

The 40-year-old Italian, who played for the Hammers between 1999 and 2003, is one of the names being touted as Alan Curbishley's successor.

Di Canio, who gained his UEFA coaching licence in April, said: "West Ham is a unique club. The fact we've had so few managers and the vast majority were former players is important.

"For me the shirt still feels like a second skin and I've followed West Ham as a fan ever since I left. The fact that I've been linked to the West Ham job is a huge pride for me."

Shearer put off by Newcastle regime

Alan Shearer has ruled himself out of the running to replace Kevin Keegan as Newcastle manager and admitted he could never work there under the current regime.

Keegan quit his post in protest at his lack of involvement in the buying and selling of players. Newcastle owner Mike Ashley instructed executive Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez, the club's vice president, to take control of the club's transfers.

"I would like to be a manager at some stage in my career, but that means controlling the players that go in and go out," he said.

"I don't think I would be comfortable working within a structure with a director of football who was picking and choosing the players for me."

Gomez determined to join top club

Stuttgart striker Mario Gomez is determined to join an elite European team after seeing two bids for his services turned down this summer.

Gomez was close to joining Bayern Munich earlier in the summer before that deal was blocked by Stuttgart, while he was also the subject of a deadline-day bid by Manchester City which was also rebuffed.

"After our game with Hannover, on August 31, Manchester City made an offer to our general manager Horst Heldt, but he turned it down," Gomez said.

"The offer from Manchester City will certainly not be the last one I receive. My aim is to play for a top club in Europe, somewhere like Italy, England or Spain."

Berbatov will boost United says Keane

Liverpool striker Robbie Keane has tipped former Tottenham team-mate Dimitar Berbatov to make Manchester United even stronger.

The Republic of Ireland skipper was not surprised when Berbatov followed him through the exit door at White Hart Lane to complete a £30.75million switch to Old Trafford.

"It was no secret that he was going to go there, everybody knew that Berba was going to go to Manchester United," he said.

"It's a fantastic move for him, but it's a massive one for Man. United because he is a top, top player. I have seen that at first hand and he will be a massive addition to the Man. United squad."

Fabregas not keen in City move

Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas feels it would be 'suicidal' for his career if he were to sign for Manchester City.

Fabregas and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres are reportedly among the list of targets, new City owner Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim has targeted for the January transfer window.

The Spanish midfielder, though, has no intention of leaving Emirates Stadium should City bid for his services in the next transfer window as he feels a move to Eastlands would prove detrimental to his career.

"It would be suicidal for my career at 21 years of age to move to City," he said. "It would make no sense."

Liverpool sign Hungarian teenager

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has added another player to the Hungarian contingent at Anfield after Zsolt Poloskei joined the club on a season-long loan.

The 17-year-old midfielder came through a trial at Melwood in pre-season and the club confirmed he will now remain on Merseyside until June 2009.

Poloseki will link up with compatriots Peter Gulacsi, Krisztian Nemeth and Andras Simon who have all arrived at the club thanks to the Reds' relationship with Budapest outfit MTK Hungaria.
