Barcelona president Joan Laporta has won the backing of 55.83 per cent of club delegates to continue in his post until the end of his mandate in 2010.

Laporta put his position in the hands of the general assembly of club delegates after 60.6 per cent of club members voted against him in a confidence vote on his administration, and the resignation of eight of his 17-strong board, last month.

The under-fire chief has faced stinging criticism of late after the Catalan giants ended the 2007/08 campaign empty-handed, the second consecutive season in which they had failed to secure any silverware.

Sir Alex - ideal man to lead team GB

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is the ideal man to lead a Great Britain team at the football tournament in the 2012 Olympics in London, Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe told reporters yesterday.

Ferguson has previously said he is unwilling to make a long-term commitment to the Games. But British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has told the BBC he has spoken to fellow Scot Ferguson about the role.

"Sir Alex's record shows that he would be the ideal choice for manager," Sutcliffe said.

The absence of a British football team at the 2008 Beijing Games marked 48 years since a GB side had competed at an Olympics.

Richards has no long-term damage

The neck injury sustained by Micah Richards, of Manchester City, during Sunday's Premier League match against West Ham is not as bad as first feared and the defender was released from hospital hours after being admitted.

The City defender was carried from the field on a stretcher during his side's 3-0 win over the hammers. Medical staff tended to the centre-half for 10 minutes before removing him from the playing surface in an attempt to reduce the risk of further aggravating the knock.

Richards suffered the injury after a collision with team-mate Tal Ben Haim.

Shevchenko thanks Chelsea fans

Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko thanked Chelsea fans for their support yesterday before undergoing a medical at Milan.

The 31-year-old suffered form and fitness problems in a difficult two-year spell at the Premier League club but was overjoyed to return to the San Siro, where the 2004 European player of the year spent seven successful seasons.

"I am really happy to be here. In this really special moment for me, I also want to say goodbye to the Chelsea fans who have always supported me in the last two years," he said.

"I truly thank them for this."

A throng of Milan fans welcomed Shevchenko at the airport on Sunday and when he arrived at the training ground yesterday.

Udinese sign Sala from Sampdoria

Experienced defender Luigi Sala, 34, has opted to leave Sampdoria and join Udinese who are short of options at the back following injuries to Christian Zapata and Dias Felipe.

"I am really happy to have signed for such an illustrious and serious club," Sala said.

"My first meeting with the players at Udinese was positive. I already knew Fabio Quagliarella, since we have played together in the past, and I have played against many of my new team-mates in Serie A."

Napoli's Zalayeta back to fitness

Marcelo Zalayeta is ready to start full training with his Napoli team-mates ahead of the new Serie A season after getting the go-ahead from club doctors who declared the Uruguay striker fit after recovering from a knee injury. He has been out for the past five months.

Zalayeta, 29, is looking to regain his place in the team but will have to work hard to impress Napoli coach Edy Reja as competition for a shirt has increased drastically at the San Paolo.

"I will be competing for a place against German Denis because we have the same style. But there is no problem, we will all be very useful," Zalayeta noted.

Zalayeta, formerly of Juventus, has made 22 appearances for Napoli.

Moyes says contract not an issue

Despite long months of negotiations, manager David Moyes has not succeeding in securing a better deal with his club Everton. Moyes, however, said the contract is not an issue as he continues to scour the transfer market in search of new additions.

The Goodison Park boss will spend the last week of the transfer window desperately trying to bolster an Everton squad which is short in numbers.

Moyes has so far failed to sign a new player since last season but he insists the contract is not an issue.

He said: "I'm fine. There is a contract there, I've spoken to the chairman and when we get around to doing it, it is available to do."
