Pele will be one of more than 120 former players who will be presented with a World Cup winning medal after missing out on playing in the final. FIFA would award medals to those players who were part of a winning squad but did not play in the decisive match of tournaments between 1930 and 1974.

Brazilian great Pele, who missed the 1962 final against Czechoslovakia because he was injured, will then officially become the only one to hold three World Cup winning medals. He also played in Brazil's winning sides of 1958 and 1970.

According to FIFA regulations in place until 1974 only players who appeared in the final were eligible for a medal, but the regulations were changed in 1978.

Totti ruled out of Kiev trip

Roma striker Francesco Totti has been ruled out of tomorrow's Champions League trip to Dynamo Kiev because of a nagging foot problem. The 31-year-old has been left out of coach Luciano Spalletti's match squad, the club website said.

The Roma captain had looked on course to make his comeback in Saturday's league win at Genoa but suffered a setback in training and will now miss his seventh successive game in Ukraine.

A win for Roma tomorrow would put them through to the Champions League last 16.

Benitez wants new signings

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has raised questions about the club's American owners' knowledge of the European transfer system. His relationship with Tom Hicks and George Gillett has reportedly come under strain because of Benitez's desire to strengthen the team.

"It's clear Mr Hicks wants the best for the club. So do I," Benitez said.

"We have been here for a long time and we know what the passion of football means and what the transfer market in Europe means.

"I'm not talking about players that cost money. We need to talk to the agents now, if not we will lose targets. In the summer, the players will be more expensive."

England job too risky - Wenger

Being coach of England's soccer team is like putting your head in the mouth of a crocodile, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.

"It's like a crocodile," said Wenger, forming his hands into a pair of jaws. "When four or five have jumped in and been eaten, the sixth one says 'I'm not going to risk and jump in there'."

Wenger said he would be happy to offer advice to the English Football Association if asked but added there were "not many (English) candidates".

Trend of naturalised Brazilians

Future World Cup finals could be overrun by teams full of Brazilians if the growing trend of their footballers turning out for other national teams is not checked, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said.

"If we don't take care about the invaders from Brazil, then we could have problems at the 2014 and 2018 World Cup finals," Blatter said.

"Out of 32 teams at the finals, we will still have other nationalities but there could be teams full of Brazilian players."

Countries like Belgium, Costa Rica, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia have used Brazilians in past World Cup finals, including the likes of Deco, Marcos Senna and Luis Oliveira.

United victims of rough tactics

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was sent from the dugout on Saturday as the champions were beaten 1-0 at Bolton. He felt his players were victims of some rough tactics from Bolton and became involved in a heated exchange with referee Mark Clattenburg.

"There were late tackles and I can't believe some of the things that were going on," Ferguson told MUTV. "I thought there were two or three very dodgy tackles and you hope the referee is strong in those situations. You need the protection and we did not get that.

"I made my feelings known to the ref and he did not like it. Some refs don't like the truth and so I had to spend the second half upstairs."

Beckham arrives in Australia

Former England captain David Beckham arrived in Australia yesterday to join his LA Galaxy team preparing for the friendly match against A-League side Sydney FC tomorrow. Beckham flew in by private jet.

"I'm very happy to be here. I've never been to this country before and it's somewhere I've wanted to visit for a long time," the 32-year-old Beckham told a news conference.

"It took me 22 hours to get here but it's more than worth it."

Galaxy's new coach Ruud Gullit also attended the news conference.

Sagnol wants to leave Bayern

France full-back Willy Sagnol has stunned Bayern Munich by saying he wants to leave the German club. Sagnol has recently returned to action after seven months out with a knee injury but did not play in Saturday's Bundesliga game win over VfL Wolfsburg.

"I asked the club's board several weeks ago to let me leave in the winter break," Sagnol said.

Sagnol, 30, declined to reveal his reasons but said they would become clear in a few weeks.

McClaren wrong to pick Carson

England goalkeeper David James has described Steve McClaren's decision to hand Scott Carson his competitive debut in Wednesday's 3-2 European Championship qualifying defeat to Croatia as "ludicrous".

"One major problem was our goalkeeping situation," the Portsmouth keeper said after a Carson error led to Croatia's first goal. "At the last hurdle we switched goalkeepers and heaped pressure on ourselves.

"In the meantime the number-two goalkeeper sitting on the bench rotated between five of us. It's ludicrous."
