Two football hooligans were yesterday ordered to stay away from any sports grounds for six months and were conditionally discharged for a year after breaking seats and getting into a fight outside the stadium.

The two men, 26-year-old Jean Paul Fiott and 18-year-old Patrick O'Shea, started causing trouble after the match between Hibernians and Sliema Wanderers, which ended in a goalless draw.

Mr O'Shea pleaded guilty to 10 charges, including resisting the police, forming part of a group to commit a crime, taking part in a fight, using offensive language and breaking seats at the stadium.

Similarly, Mr Fiott, admitted to seven charges including resisting the police, gathering in a crowd to commit a crime and breaching the public peace. Unaided by lawyers, the two men preferred to plead guilty to the charges immediately.

Magistrate Antonio Vella decided to conditionally discharge them for one year and banned them from entering any sports ground.

The police are expected to arraign 15 people in connection with hooliganism in the coming days.

Police Inspectors Sandro Camilleri and Robert Vella prosecuted.
