Fireman maimed: The Ligue 1 match between Nice and Marseille was suspended for five minutes after a fireman was hurt by a firebomb, a security officer said yesterday. The firebomb was thrown from the Marseille fans' stand and the fireman lost two fingers when trying to grab it on the ground. The match was interrupted while stewards in the Stade du Ray tried to find the fireman's fingers. Nice won the game 2-1.

Vieira: Inter midfielder Patrick Vieira will miss the away match against Champions League rivals Spartak Moscow tomorrow after failing to recover from a sprained ankle. The 30-year-old French international suffered the injury during Inter's 4-3 win over Milan on Saturday and was left out of Inter squad for the trip to Russia, which was announced yesterday. His place in the starting line-up is likely to be taken by Javier Zanetti, who also played in midfield during the win over Milan.

Dundee United: Dundee United manager Craig Brewster and his assistant Malcolm Thomson have left by mutual consent, the club said. Former Dundee United striker Brewster had won just two of his last 28 games in charge. A 5-1 defeat at Falkirk on Saturday left United bottom of the SPL with eight points from 12 matches. Brewster replaced Gordon Chisholm last January, to become the club's fifth manager in six years.

Anderson: Brazilian playmaker Anderson has been ruled out of Porto's Champions League Group G match against Hamburg SV on Wednesday due to a calf injury that could keep him sidelined for up to two months. The teenager sustained the injury in his right leg during Saturday's 3-2 win over rivals Benfica. Anderson was carried off on a stretcher in the 25th minute after a tackle with Benfica's Greek midfielder Konstantinos Katsouranis.

Gavilan: Valencia midfielder Jaime Gavilan will be out of action for between six and seven months after tests revealed the he has torn the cruciate ligament in his right leg. The highly rated Under-21 international sustained the injury 10 minutes into Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Racing Santander.
