Floriana received a timely boost yesterday with the signing of experienced defender Brian Said who is returning for a second stint with the Greens.

Said started this season with Marsaxlokk but the Malta defender was free to change clubs outside the transfer window after terminating his contract with the southseasiders last month. Marsaxlokk have since lost their Premier League status for match-fixing.

The 36-year-old, who has reclaimed a regular place in the national team since John Buttigieg took over from Dusan Fitzel, attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including Tarxien Rainbows and Ħamrun Spartans. But, Floriana were always seen as favourites to land his signature.

"Floriana FC would like to announce that national team defender Brian Said has joined the team on a permanent basis," the Premier League club said in a statement yesterday.

"Said will bring with him a wealth of experience, both at local and international level. He is not new to the Floriana clan as he previously donned the green and white shirt prior to joining Sliema Wanderers."

Said's arrival at Floriana is a huge lift for Irish coach Roddy Collins who last week lost Nigerian defender Sunday Eboh and midfielder Christian Cassar for the rest of the season after both suffered cruciate knee injuries in the 6-0 defeat to Valletta.

Floriana drew 1-1 with Tarxien Rainbows last weekend and are currently sixth in the Premier League with two points from three matches.
