Much is being said and written about Alfred Sant's refusal to attend the Xarabank discussion together with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi. Logic states that if Dr Sant is so sure about his party policies then he would miss no occasion to discuss them with the electorate.

Unfortunately, Dr Sant is once again deliberately unclear. This is a déjà-vu of the infamous VAT removal policy.

We all know what happened then. How it was only Dr Sant who seemed set on the implementation of the CET, how everyone told him he was wrong, how many voters towed cash registers behind their vehicles thinking VAT was dead only to find out they had been done in, how so many were fooled or made to look foolish, how Dr Sant's own concocted value added tax, the CET, increased tax by six per cent overnight.

May it all serve as a lesson.
