Flyash from the power stations was used in the mixture with concrete for the building of culverts belonging to Enemalta and not as a material for building works, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech has said in Parliament.

He said that since the flyash was a by-product of oil combustion, it could not be radioactive and there was therefore no need for radioactivity testing.

He said that Enemalta currently exported flyash for procession in licenced facilities in Europe.

Asked by Labour MP George Vella about measures being taken by Enemalta to safeguard the people's health, the minister said that the corporation had specified the use of emission-reducing equipment so that emissions would conform to EU levels. They include Selective Catalytic Reactors (SCR’s) for the reduction of NOx, reactors to reduce SO2, and dust filters.
