The old railway tunnel under Floriana was opened for visitors today as part of a Floriana Open Day which saw various attractions in the town welcome visitors.

The tunnel was in use between 1883 until 1931 when the train used it to cross from under City Gate in Valletta to Portes des Bombes.

A second tunnel, under Rabat to Mtarfa, was inaugurated in 1900.

The Floriana tunnel has remained unused since the demise of the railway, other than for a section which was used as a large shelter during the war. Parts are also used for underground cables.

Today's activities were organised by Floriana local council.
